Hermetia illucens Larvae Meal as Partial Fishmeal Replacement in Jade Perch Diet Cultured in Biofloc: Growth Performance, Feed Efficiency and Consumer Acceptance

A 12-week feeding trial on jade perch (Scortum barcoo) was conducted to evaluate the outcomes of partial substitution of fishmeal with black soldier fly larvae meal (BSFLM) in a biofloc system that requires minimal water exchange. The jade perch juveniles were subjected to three dietary treatments namely the 100% fishmeal (FM100), 50% BSFLM (BSF50), and a commercial diet (COM) with 20 individuals per treatment in triplicate tanks. Growth, feed efficiency, and body indices were measured throughout the feeding trial. There were no significant differences observed between the treatments in growth indicators such as the body weight gain (84.55 - 89.10 g), feed conversion ratio (1.77 - 1.87), specific growth rate (1.71 - 1.81 %/day), protein efficiency ratio (1.69 - 1.77), survival rate (90.00 - 98.48 %) and fillet yield (34.94 - 37.08 %). The condition factor is similar in all treatment groups ranging from 1.97 - 2.05. The crude protein and moisture content making up fish body composition are not statistically different among treatments, but higher crude lipids are obtained in the BSF50 (32.33 ± 5.27 g/kg) and COM (31.67 ± 2.76 g/kg). Higher hepatosomatic index (HSI) and visceral fat somatic index (VFSI) values were observed in BSF50 group at 3.13 ± 0.25 and 10.89 ± 1.68, respectively. Furthermore, sensory evaluation comparing the consumers' evaluation and acceptance of the fish cultured with the different dietary treatment and culture system shows that the group fed BSF50 and cultured in biofloc system received similar overall appreciation with the FM100 and COM group. In conclusion, BSFLM inclusion in the jade perch diet, combined with the biofloc system, is feasible to be explored further.

Utilization of sustainable agri-waste watermelon rind for fishmeal in Labeo rohita diets: Effects on nutritional indices, hemato-biochemical properties, histoarchitechtural traits, amino acid and fatty acid profiles

Fish meal (FM) remains an essential protein source with certain limitations like cost and sustainability in the aquaculture industry. Underutilized agricultural wastes with nutraceutical potential could be the feasible solution. This study paved the way for new avenues in the form of economically sustainable low-cost feed for betterment of aquaculture, by evaluating watermelon rind (WMR) as fish meal replacement in diets for Labeo rohita (rohu). Dried water melon rind was incorporated into five isonitrogenous diets (control, 25% fish meal replacement (FMR), 50% FMR, 75% FMR, and 100% FMR then fed to triplicates groups of L. rohita fingerlings. The experiment was conducted for 60 days. There were significant (p<0.05) improvements in nutritional indices of fish fed with 50% FMR. The digestive enzyme analysis showed a promising result in fish fed with 50% FMR diet compared to the control and other experimental diets indicating that fishmeal replaced with 50% FMR diet will be suitable for the digestion in the experimental fish rohu. Finally, histological alterations of organs showed a reduction in the damage of tissues in fish fed with WMR inclusion diets. Enrichment of amino acids (AA) and fatty acids (FA) was observed in the fish muscle. Overall, our results confirm that the 50% fishmeal replacement diet with watermelon rind is a promising alternative for fish meal displaying no adverse effects. Thus, the study concludes that the partial replacement of fishmeal by WMR provides new insights into nutrient utilization, and growth performances, digestibility, and biochemical compositions of freshwater fish L. rohita.

Partial Replacement of Fish Meal with Protein Hydrolysates in the Diet of Penaeus vannamei (Boone, 1934) during the Nursery Phase

The objective was to evaluate the effects of partial replacement of fish meal with protein hydrolysates and a commercial product in the diets of Penaeus vannamei post-larvae on zootechnical performance, proximate chemical composition, digestive enzyme activity, and total hemocyte count. The experiment was conducted in a clear water recirculation system comprising 24 experimental units, each with 30 shrimp with an average weight of 0.2 g. The treatments were control, chicken protein hydrolysate (CPH), enzymatic hydrolysate of chicken feathers, Aquabite®, CPH + maltodextrin, and CPH + yeast, with four replicates each. The inclusion level of the different protein sources evaluated was 6%. At the end of the experiment, all shrimp were counted, weighed, and measured to determine the zootechnical performance. The body and feed chemical compositions, as well as the enzymatic activities of the hepatopancreas and the total hemocyte count in the hemolymph, were analyzed. The data obtained were subjected to ANOVA and Tukey’s test. There was no statistical difference between the treatments in any of the analyzed parameters. The results showed that all the evaluated protein hydrolysates can be used as partial substitutes for fish meal in P. vannamei diets during the nursery phase, maintaining equivalent and adequate digestive enzyme activities, health, growth, and body composition of the shrimp, in addition to being ecologically sustainable ingredients.

Different Protein Hydrolysates Can Be Used in the Penaeus vannamei (Boone, 1934) Diet as a Partial Replacement for Fish Meal during the Grow-Out Phase

This study evaluated the inclusion of protein hydrolysates and a commercial product as a partial replacement for fish meals in the diet of Pacific white shrimp (Penaeus vannamei) during the grow-out phase. A recirculation system with 24 experimental units and a biological filter was used. The experimental design was completely randomized with six treatments: control; chicken protein hydrolysate (CPH); enzymatic hydrolysate of chicken feathers; Aquabite®; CPH + maltodextrin; CPH + yeast; and four replicates. After 50 days, the zootechnical performance and animal welfare parameters, centesimal carcass composition, digestive enzyme activity, and hemocyte count were evaluated. The treatments did not affect the zootechnical performance and total hemocyte count of the animals (p &gt; 0.05). The evaluation of the antenna length indicated that all animals were in good health. The antenna length in treatment T5 was significantly greater (p &gt; 0.05) than that in T4 and similar to that in treatments T3 and T6, demonstrating a positive influence of dietary protein hydrolysates. Concerning animal welfare, dietary protein hydrolysates influenced the length of the antenna (p &lt; 0.05). The antenna length associated with different treatments indicated that the animals were in good welfare conditions in the production environment. With respect to body chemical composition, dry matter, ether extract, and ash were affected by the treatments (p &lt; 0.05). Regarding the analysis of digestive enzymes, the treatments influenced the activities of amylase and trypsin (p &lt; 0.05). The performance of the animals was satisfactory under all treatments, including enzymatic activity, demonstrating the possibility of using hydrolysates.

Haematococcus pluvialis biomass as a replacement for fish meal in the diet of Macrobrachium amazonicum post-larvae (Heller, 1862)

The current study evaluates the effect of partial or total replacement of fish meal with Haematococcus pluvialis microalgae, cultivated in an NPK culture medium, on the growth performance of Macrobrachion amazonicum shrimp post-larvae. Four diets were formulated: control (without microalgae), 25, 50 and 100% H. pluvialis replacement. Only crude protein weight gain showed no interaction and was not selected for principal components analysis. The 25% fishmeal replacement in the diet was not effective, being similar to the control. However, the complete replacement of fishmeal with H. pluvialis promoted elevated survivability, length, weight and protein retention, making it the most relevant treatment for M. amazonicum post-larvae. Therefore, it is possible to completely replace fishmeal with the microalgae H. pluvialis in the diet of M. amazonicum shrimp, which improves growth performance.

Effects of partial replacement of fish meal with black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens) larvae meal on growth performance, lipid metabolism and hepatointestinal health of juvenile golden pompano (Trachinotus ovatus)

This experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of partial replacement of fish meal with black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) meal on growth performance, body and muscle nutrients, lipid metabolism, intestinal morphology and microbiota of juvenile golden pompano (Trachinotus ovatus). Three isolipidic (12.40 ± 0.29%) and isoproteinic (42.98 ± 0.02%) experimental diets were formulated to feed golden pompano by replacing 0% (BSFL0), 25% (BSFL25) and 50% (BSFL50) of fish meal with BSFL meal. The experiment lasted for a total of 8 weeks. The results showed that compared with BSFL0, BSFL25 could significantly increase feed intake of golden pompano (P < 0.05). However, BSFL50 significantly reduced growth performance (P < 0.05). The hepatosomatic index, body and muscle crude fat in BSFL25 and BSFL50 decreased. BSFL25 could significantly reduce the activity of fatty acid synthase (FAS) and significantly enhance the activity of lipase (LPS) (P < 0.05). Both BSFL25 and BSFL50 could significantly reduce the number and volume of lipid droplets in the liver, but BSFL50 could damage the intestinal morphology and shorten the intestinal villi. Compared with BSFL0, the richness (Chao1, ACE, Sobs) and diversity (Shannon and Simpson) of intestinal microbiota in BSFL25 and BSFL50 were increased, and the abundance of Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria and Bacteroidetes was increased. In conclusion, the replacement of 25% fish meal in the feed by BSFL meal improved the food intake, lipid deposition in the liver, and intestinal microbiota balance of golden pompano, and had no harmful effects on growth and intestinal health. However, when the substitution level reached 50%, it would have a negative impact on growth and intestinal health.

The Effects of Dietary Fermented Soybean Meal Supplementation on the Growth, Antioxidation, Immunity, and mTOR Signaling Pathway of Juvenile Coho Salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch)

This experiment aims to investigate the effects of partial replacement of fish meal (FM) by soybean meal (SBM) and/or fermented soybean meal (FSBM) on the growth, serum biochemistry, digestion, antioxidation, immunity, and mTOR signaling pathway of juvenile coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch). Four iso-nitrogen and iso-lipid diets were designed and fed to four groups of juvenile coho salmon (152.25 ± 2.96 g) in triplicate for 10 weeks. The four diets were the G0 diet (control group, containing 28% FM protein), the G1 diet (containing 10% SBM protein and 18% FM protein), the G2 diet (containing 5% SBM protein, 5% FSBM protein, and 18% FM protein), and the G3 diet (containing 10% FSBM protein and 18% FM protein). It was found that compared with the G0 diet (control group), the activities of catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), pepsin, trypsin, α-amylase, and lipase, and the expression levels of mammalian target of rapamycin (mtor), protein kinase B (akt), phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (pi3k), plant ribosome S6K protein kinase (s6ks), and lysozyme (lyz) genes, of juvenile coho salmon fed the G3 diet increased significantly (p &lt; 0.05), and the expression levels of tumor necrosis factor (tnf-α), interleukin-1β (il-1β), and interleukin-6 (il-6) genes of juvenile coho salmon fed the G3 diet decreased significantly (p &lt; 0.05). However, there were no significant differences in growth, muscle composition, and serum biochemistry of juvenile coho salmon fed the G3 diet compared with the G0 diet (p &gt; 0.05). In conclusion, replacing 10% FM protein with FSBM protein could improve the digestion, antioxidation, immunity, and mTOR signaling pathway of juvenile coho salmon.

Partial Replacement of Fishmeal with Poultry By-Product Meal in Diets for Coho Salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) Post-Smolts.

The present study evaluated the effects of partially substituting fish meal (FM) with poultry by-product meal (PBPM) on the growth, muscle composition, and tissue biochemical parameters of coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) post-smolts. Five isonitrogenous (7.45% nitrogen) and isoenergetic (18.61 MJ/kg gross energy) experimental diets were made by substituting 0%, 10%, 20%, 40%, and 60% FM protein with PBPM protein, which were designated accordingly as PBPM0 (the control), PBPM10, PBPM20, PBPM40, and PBPM60, respectively. Each diet was fed to triplicates of ten post-smolts (initial individual body weight, 180.13 ± 1.32 g) in three floating cages three times daily (6:50, 11:50, and 16:50) to apparent satiation for 84 days. Both specific growth rate (SGR) and protein efficiency ratio did not differ significantly (p > 0.05) among the control, PBPM10, and PBPM20 groups, which were remarkably (p < 0.05) higher than those of the PBPM40 and PBPM60 groups. Feed conversion ratio varied inversely with SGR. The PBPM replacement had no remarkable effects on the morphological indices and proximal muscle components. The control and PBPM10 groups led to significantly higher muscle contents of leucine, lysine, and methionine than groups of higher PBPM inclusion. The groups of PBPM40 and PBPM60 obtained significantly (p < 0.05) higher serum alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase activities than the control and low PBPM inclusion groups. The control group had significantly higher albumin and total cholesterol contents than the groups with PBPM inclusion. The control group had significantly higher triglycerides content than the PBPM60 group. The PBPM60 group had significantly lower contents of high-density lipoprotein, low-density lipoprotein, and total protein than the control and PBPM10 groups. The high PBPM replacement level up to 40% and 60% had adverse effects on hepatic malondialdehyde levels. The catalase and superoxide dismutase activities were not affected by low PBPM inclusion, but significantly decreased in high-PBPM-inclusion groups. Based on broken-line regression analysis of SGR and PER, the optimum dietary PBPM replacing level was evaluated to be 16.63-17.50% of FM protein for coho salmon post-smolts.

Chemical and Physical Properties of African Catfish (Clarias gariepinus) Fillet Following Prolonged Feeding with Insect Meal-Based Diets.

A 25-week experiment was undertaken to explore the effect of partial replacement of dietary fishmeal (FM) with black soldier fly meal (Hermetia illucens) (BS), mealworm meal (Tenebrio molitor) (MW), and a 1 : 1 mixture of both insect meals (BSMW) on fillet quality in African catfish (Clarias gariepinus). A total of 96 fish with an average initial body weight of 248 ± 28 g were stocked into a recirculating aquaculture system and fed in four different dietary groups (control, BS, MW, and BSMW). No mortality was recorded in any of the groups. At the end of the feeding period, 24 fish (n = 6 for each treatment, weight between 690 and 822 g) were used for analysis. There was no alteration in filleting yield or other slaughter indices within experimental groups, except the hepatosomatic index. Among quality attributes, pH 24 hr postmortem exhibited a significant difference (p < 0.05). In respect of the fatty acid profile, the n-6/n-3 ratio ranged between 1.17 and 1.40 but was not significantly modified by the partial replacement of FM. Similarly, the proximate composition of the fillets was not significantly different between the control and experimental diet groups. The ratio of polyunsaturated fatty acid to saturated fatty acids ranged between 0.67 and 0.79 in the fillets, without significant differences between groups. The atherogenic index was increased in the BS group, as compared to the others; however, the thrombogenicity index of fillets was not significantly affected. Similarly, the conventional quality traits of the fillet, such as cooking, drip, and thawing losses, did not differ within treatments. This study demonstrates that the dietary inclusion of black soldier fly and/or mealworm meals used for African catfish at the tested inclusion level has negligible impact on fillet properties.

Partial replacement of fish meal by cottonseed protein concentrate and the effects of preconditioning water content and die temperature on pellet physical quality of extruded floating fish feed

A two-factorial central composite design was performed to investigate the effects of preconditioning water content (PCwater: 21, 22.5, 26, 29.5 or 31%) and die temperature (Dtemp: 115, 119.4, 130, 140.6 or 145 ℃) on the physical properties of extruded floating fish feed. This design was applied to two separate diet formulas to study the effect of cottonseed protein concentrate (CPC) inclusion (replacing 67% of fish meal-FM in the diet). A total of 26 batches of diets were prepared. Response surface methodology was used for regression and parameter optimization. Averaged over all PCwater and Dtemp combinations, CPC-pellets had a lower bulk density, oil leakage, higher expansion rate, oil absorption, hardness, pellet durability index and a longer hydration time than FM-pellets. A negative correlation between oil absorption and oil leakage was presented in the CPC-pellets but not in the FM-pellets. Moreover, the influence of PCwater on the PPQ was uniform across both formulas except for oil leakage. However, the effect of Dtemp on the PPQ differed between the formulas. For oil leakage, it was maximal at both the highest PCwater and Dtemp combination in the FM-pellets, while it was maximized at both the lowest PCwater and Dtemp combination in the CPC-pellets. Furthermore, exchanging fish meal with CPC improved the optimal processing conditions and enlarged the operating window to produce the desired feed. This reduces water and energy consumption in feed production.

Genetic Identification and Traceability of Insect Meals.

Insects have been proposed as a rich alternative source of protein for the partial or total replacement of fishmeal in aquaculture. For maximum safety and effectiveness of insect meals, control of the quality composition of these products is considered mandatory. The aim of this study was the genetic analysis of the composition of commercially available insect meals at the species level. Commercially available Hermetia illucens, Tenebrio molitor and Musca domestica individuals, as well as nine insect meals produced from these species, were analyzed. The genetic identification of insects at the species level was based on a COI fragment, and analysis of the insect meals' composition was performed with the processes of cloning and colony PCR. Genetic analysis indicated that the commercially available larvae morphologically identified as Musca domestica belonged to the species Muscina stabulans. In the commercially available insect meals, no other animal species was identified beyond the expected one. However, in the insect meal produced for research purposes, fungal growth was detected. The used methodology, herein, allows for the qualitative genetic identification of insect meals and could be included in the methods of traceability of products containing insects and other animal species.

Substituting Fish Meal with Tubiechong (Eupolyphaga sinensis) By-Product in the Diets of Largemouth Bass (Micropterus salmoides): Effects on Growth, Meat Quality, and Liver Health.

A feeding trial was conducted to evaluate the effect of replacing 0% (control), 10% (T10), 20% (T20), 30% (T30), and 40% (T40) fish meal with a Tubiechong (Eupolyphaga sinensis) by-product in largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides). Triplicate groups of 30 fish (5.36 ± 0.01 g) were fed two times daily to apparent satiation for 60 days. The experimental results showed that the Tubiechong by-product could improve the growth performance of largemouth bass by increasing the FBW, WGR, and SGR until the replacement ratio was 40%. The quadratic regression analysis showed that the proportion of the Tubiechong by-product was 20.79% and 20.91%, respectively, when WGR and SGR were the best. Concurrently, the meat quality in the replacement groups was higher, specifically, the lightness and white values were higher, and the water loss rates were lower (P < 0.05) than that in the control group. Moreover, the changes of the activities of CAT and GSH in the liver and T-AOC and GSH in serum could reveal the antioxidant capacity improvement of fish by the Tubiechong by-product. In the study, the replacement groups had lower T-CHO and HDL-C in serum (P < 0.05), indicating that the Tubiechong by-product had an active role in improving blood lipid and regulating lipid metabolism. Simultaneously, the replacement groups had a normal structure with central hepatocytes' nuclei and deviated from the center partly, while most of the hepatocytes were swollen in the control group with nuclear degeneration. The results showed that the Tubiechong by-product had a positive effect on the liver health of fish. Conclusively, the present study indicated that the partial dietary replacement of fish meal using the Tubiechong by-product (for up to 40% replacement level) in the diet of largemouth bass not only caused no adverse effects on fish health but also improved the growth performance, meat quality, antioxidant capacity, and hepatic health and is conducive to supplying nutritious, high-quality, and healthy aquatic products.

Dietary replacement of fishmeal with marine proteins recovered from shrimp and herring process waters promising in Atlantic salmon aquaculture

There is a general agreement that fish meal (FM) and fish oil (FO) are valuable resources for aquafeed, but that the production cannot keep the same pace as the current growth of the aquaculture industry. Therefore, there is a need to find alternative sources for lipids and protein. This study examines the possibility of using proteins recovered from seafood industry side stream waters as a complement to FM in feed for Atlantic salmon. To recover the proteins, herring and shrimp process side streams waters were flocculated then treated with dissolved air flotation (DAF), which is considered a gentle technology. Shrimp steam water was used to obtain shrimp protein (SP) and herring salt brine to obtain herring protein (HP). The recovered semi-solid protein fraction was spray dried and formulated into experimental diets at inclusion levels of 1.9–10% (dw/dw). Two feeding trials were conducted to investigate; 1) the properties of different flocculants to recover SP from shrimp steam water, alginate (Alg; 1.9% inclusion), carrageenan (Carr; 2.0% inclusion) and a synthetic flocculant from Kemira (Kem; 3.8% inclusion). 2) total or partial replacement of FM with SP-Alg (10% and no FM) and HP-Alg (3% and 8% FM). For both feeding trials each diet was provided to triplicate tanks (n = 31 and 30/tank) of Atlantic salmon with a start weight of 193 g (duration 10 weeks) and 304 g (duration 7 weeks) respectively.All fish showed similar feed intake, feed conversion ratio (on tank basis) and weight gain. The inclusion of SP or HP as total or partial replacement of FM did neither influence adiposity of the fish, as measured by condition factor, nor heposomatic index (HSI). No negative effect of the alternative protein could be found through histological examination of the intestine. In feeding trial two, diets did not affect the adaptive immune indicators CD8α and MHC II. The SP-Alg diet did not affect intestinal barrier and transporting functions, assessed using Ussing-chamber technology. However, HP-Alg affected the trans-epithelial resistance, which indicate that the intestinal barrier function could be affected by low inclusions. We conclude that from a biological perspective, SP recovered from shrimp steaming waters using Alg and DAF technology represents a new marine biomass with potential as a replacement for FM in Atlantic salmon feed. To diversify the possibility of using flocculants to retrieve proteins we also suggest further investigation of the potential to use Carr in larger inclusions.

Metabolic effects of diet containing blue mussel (Mytilus edulis) and blue mussel-fed salmon in a mouse model of obesity

Alternative feed ingredients for farmed salmon are warranted due to increasing pressure on wild fish stocks. As locally farmed blue mussels may represent an environmentally sustainable substitute with a lower carbon footprint, we aimed to test the potential and safety of substituting fish meal with blue mussel meal in feed for Atlantic salmon. Salmon were fed diets in which fish meal was partially replaced with blue mussel meal in increments, accounting for up to 13.1 % of the ingredients. Fillets from the salmon were subsequently used to prepare obesity-promoting western diets for a 13-weeks mouse feeding trial. In a second mouse trial, we tested the effects of inclusion of up to 8% blue mussel meal directly in a meat-based western diet. Partial replacement of fish meal with blue mussel meal in fish feed preserved the n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) content in salmon fillets. The observed blue mussel-induced changes in the fatty acid profiles in salmon fillets did not translate into similar changes in the livers of mice that consumed the salmon, and no clear dose-dependent responses were found. The relative levels of the marine n-3 fatty acids, EPA, and DHA were not reduced, and the n-3/n-6 PUFA ratios in livers from all salmon-fed mice were unchanged. The inclusion of blue mussel meal in a meat-based western diet led to a small, but dose-dependent increase in the n-3/n-6 PUFA ratios in mice livers. Diet-induced obesity, glucose intolerance, and hepatic steatosis were unaffected in both mice trials and no blue mussel-induced adverse effects were observed. In conclusion, our results suggest that replacing fish meal with blue mussel meal in salmon feed will not cause adverse effects in those who consume the salmon fillets.

The possibility of partial replacement of fish meal with alfalfa flour in feeds for the Australian red-clawed crayfish (Cherax quadricarinatus) has been investigated. Crayfish were kept in aquariums with a volume of 150 liters at a temperature of 24-26.5 °C. The control group was fed with granular feed intended for sturgeon fish. In experimental feeds, fish meal was partially replaced with alfalfa flour. An enzyme preparation, natuzyme, was added to one of the feed options. The duration of the experiment was 45 days. Feeding was carried out manually 2 times a day in the morning and evening hours. The feed was introduced in portions, monitoring the digestibility. The feeding rate was 2-4% of body weight. Morphometric, linear-weight and biochemical parameters of Cherax quadricarinatus and hemocyte formula are analyzed. It was found that the growth of crayfish on feeds with high and low animal protein content occurred almost equally, which indicates a good prospect of using alfalfa flour in feed in order to reduce their cost by reducing the amount of fish meal. At the same time, for better assimilation of the plant components of the feed, it is recommended to add the complex enzyme preparation natuzyme to the feed. The positive effect of feed with the addition of alfalfa flour on biochemical parameters and hemocyte formula of the Australian red-clawed crayfish was noted. Experimental feeds provided sufficient content of total protein, lipids, glucose, phosphorus and calcium in the hemolymph. A decrease in urea content was found.

Physiological Response of Grower African Catfish to Dietary Black Soldier Fly and Mealworm Meal

A six-week experiment was carried out to test the effects of total (100%) and partial (50%) replacement of fish meal in the diet of African catfish growers with black soldier fly (B) meal, yellow mealworm (M) meal, and a 1:1 combination of both (BM) on the production and health of fish. A total of 420 fish with an average initial body weight of 200 ± 0.5 g were randomly distributed in triplicate to seven diet groups (C, B50, B100, M50, M100, BM50, and BM100, respectively). The growth performance and feed utilization of fish fed with partial or total replacement levels of FM with B were not significantly affected (p > 0.05) during the 6 weeks of feeding. In contrast, significant differences were observed between the groups fed with a diet where FM was totally replaced with M meal and the control in terms of final body weight, specific growth rate, feed conversion ratio, protein efficiency ratio, and protein productive value. Among the blood plasma biochemistry parameters, total cholesterol exhibited a significant difference (p = 0.007) between the M treatments and the control diet. The fatty acid profile of the liver was changed with respect to the long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid content in all experimental groups. Parallel with this, the upregulation of elovl5 and fas genes in liver was found in all experimental groups compared to the control. Overall, this study shows that fish meal cannot be substituted with yellow mealworm meal in the practical diet of African catfish without compromising the growth, health and feed utilization parameters.

Growth Performance, Antioxidant and Immunity Capacity Were Significantly Affected by Feeding Fermented Soybean Meal in Juvenile Coho Salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch)

This study aims to investigate the effects of partial dietary replacement of fish meal with unfermented and/or fermented soybean meal (fermented by Bacillus cereus) supplemented on the growth performance, whole-body composition, antioxidant and immunity capacity, and their related gene expression of juvenile coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch). Four groups of juveniles (initial weight 159.63 ± 9.54 g) at 6 months of age in triplicate were fed for 12 weeks on four different iso-nitrogen (about 41% dietary protein) and iso-lipid (about 15% dietary lipid) experimental diets. The main results were: Compared with the control diet, the diet with replaced 10% fish meal protein with fermented soybean meal protein supplementation can significantly (p < 0.05) influence the expression of superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase, glutathione S-transferase, nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2, tumor necrosis factor α and interleukin-6 genes, the growth performance, the serum biochemical indices, and the activity of antioxidant and immunity enzymes. However, there was no significant effect (p > 0.05) on the survival rate (SR) and whole-body composition in the juveniles among the experimental groups. In conclusion, the diet with replaced 10% fish meal protein with fermented soybean meal protein supplementation could significantly increase the growth performance, antioxidant and immunity capacity, and their related gene expression of juveniles.

Influence of Hermetia illucens Larvae Meal Dietary Inclusion on Growth Performance, Gut Histological Traits and Stress Parameters in Sparus aurata.

This study provided new data and knowledge on the potential use of Hermetia illucens meal (HIM) as a new sustainable ingredient for Sparus aurata diet. The effect of HIM dietary inclusion on fish growth performance, stress indicators and gut histology was studied. For 131 days, 312 fish were fed a basal diet containing fishmeal as animal protein source, and three diets containing 25%, 35% and 50% HIM as a partial replacement for fishmeal. The main findings indicated that fishmeal can be replaced by HIM up to 110 g/kg of substitution (35% of inclusion in diet) without negative effects on growth performance, stress parameters or histological traits of the posterior gut tract, and with positive effects (p < 0.05) on the histological and morphometric characteristics of the anterior gut tract. At the same time, the results showed that the effect of Hermetia illucens meal at 50% inclusion level caused morphometric and histopathological alterations in the anterior gut tract of seabream. In conclusion, this preliminary study suggested that the dietary inclusion level of HIM35 was the most tolerated by fish showing the best gut morphometric parameters and histological conditions, with fewer signs of inflammation, as well as good nutritional and health status.
